- Emphasize auditory discrimination, teaching children to hear separate
sounds in words.
- Introduce correct printing of letters and numbers.
- Exercise listening skills.
- Give practice in following directions.
- Assist teachers in:
- Creating relationships with their new classes.
- Establishing an atmosphere for learning.
- Setting a level playing field for children who have come to kindergarten
with varied preschool backgrounds.
Teacher’s Guide 1: Let's Get Started - Stellar Phonics to Reading: Workbook 1 introduces
concepts such as in/out, on/off, up/down, top/bottom, over/under, and left/right.
It reviews shapes and colors, exercises visual perception and auditory discrimination,
and briefly introduces printing, so that when children in your class begin
the focused learning of letter sounds, letter printing, and reading, they are
all on a level playing field. Workbook 1 lessens the differences in
the knowledge and skills children enter school with, since they may not all
have the same preschool background. It greatly increases children’s ability
to understand you and follow your directions. The lessons are designed to assist
you during the first few weeks in establishing a routine, and to be a fun,
gentle way of getting acquainted and bonding with your new class. If you can
devote most of your time (1½–2 hours daily) to phonics, then you
will be able to complete one lesson a day. For some classes, two days per lesson
is more comfortable. All Teacher’s Guides contain daily lesson plans that include:
- Review: Reinforcing previously taught concepts
- Introduction: New letter(s) or spellings
- Listening: Beginning, middle, ending, rhyming, syllables
- Blending and reading: Words, sentences, or stories
- Printing: Letters, words, sentences, or stories
- Student Workbook pages
- Follow-Up Exercises
- Extension activities
- Thinking Skills activity
- Connections: Activities which link phonics to social studies, science
and health
- Assessment tools
