The five Word Series Baseball games provide practice with beginning, middle, and ending sounds, as well as blending sounds into words. The player draws a game ball (a baseball cut-out with a word) from the pitcher’s mound, then must correctly say the beginning sound of the word to get to first base. If the player can say the correct middle (vowel) sound, he or she can advance to second base. Saying the correct ending sound gets the player to third base. Blending the sounds into a word gets the player to home base. As students progress game balls from several games can be mixed to challenge them. Balls are color coded for easy sorting.
Hint: The game balls make a great assessment tool. Give each child several game balls and have them read the words to you for a grade. Another way to use the game balls is as passwords. Pass out one, two, or three balls to each child (depending on how accomplished they are) just before recess. The children must read the passwords to you before going out to play.
Game 1 includes a game board and game balls with long-vowel, single-syllable words that only use the letters A–S. This game was designed as a review for children who have completed Stellar Phonics to Reading: Workbook 4.
