The ultimate resource for Madeline L’Engle’s classic tale of good versus evil. The science behind the science fiction is explored through the history of time keeping and the concepts of time and space travel. As Meg, the book’s protagonist, and her companions travel through their adventures in space and time, Einstein’s life and his discovery of the theories of Spacial and General Relativity are discussed. Students learn about geometric progression, light as energy, the two-dimensional world of Flatland, and how to build a tesseract. When Meg, Calvin, and Charles Wallace battle “the dark thing,” biographies of the historical figures from Jesus to Michelangelo are included to enrich the students' understanding of what makes someone “a light against the darkness.” By contrast, the Nazi regime and its prejudice against the Jews is studied as a “Dark Thing,” as is Einstein’s subsequent escape to the United States when his theory of relativity was outlawed as “Jewish physics.”
