The Witch of Blackbird Pond is a story of a young girl who is orphaned when her beloved grandfather dies. She is then forced to move from the island of Barbados in the Caribbean Sea to Wethersfield, Connecticut with relatives she doesn’t know. The story is set in 1687, when most of Wethersfield’s settlers are disgruntled English citizens trying to start a new life in America. Students will learn valuable lessons regarding loyalty and justice, as this novel’s protagonist, Kit Tyler, struggles to discover to whom she should be loyal and what is right, or just.
