Passport to El Dorado The pursuit of gold as a driving force for the early explorers is examined as social studies, reading, and writing are combined to show how two cultures were divided by gold. The Native American version of a perfect society, or El Dorado, is contrasted with the 15th century European version. The Columbian legend of a king who sacrifices his gold each year in the holy Lake Guatavita is compared with Voltaire’s Candide, and the story of Coronado’s quest for the seven cities of gold. The age of navigation and exploration from Prince Henry the Navigator through Magellan are studied as students read Around the World in a Hundred Years by Jean Fritz. Excerpts from Columbus’s journal, and an examination of the Columbus exchange of animals and crops add insight into the economic effects of his discovery of the New World. The literature is included.
