In The Iron Dragon Never Sleeps, ten-year-old Winnie Tucker learns about tolerance and friendship when she meets Lee Cheng, a Chinese boy, working on the construction of the Central Pacific Railroad. This packet includes primary source reading selections about early California History. The true story of Tabetha Furguson Bingham, a 49er, who made the arduous trek to the California gold fields is included, as well as Mark Twain’s description of a rollicking stagecoach ride. Modes of transportation then and now are explored, including: the wind wagon, the airplane, the bullet train, hovercrafts, the Segway and many other forms.
